      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - From a Death Sentence in the Andes to a Forever Home in Seattle: Maddy’s Journey</image:title>
      <image:caption>Maddy’s story begins in Tingo Paccha, a small community in the Andes of Peru, where life for many animals is uncertain from the very beginning. She was only about three months old when we found her. A tiny puppy, fragile and underweight, already facing a future she could not escape. Her mother had been killed, and Maddy was next. Her owners told us they were going to poison her. To them, Maddy was not a companion. She was a problem. A female dog who would eventually have puppies they could not afford to feed or care for. Even when we offered to pay for her sterilization, they refused. They didn’t believe it would change anything. They had already decided.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - From a Death Sentence in the Andes to a Forever Home in Seattle: Maddy’s Journey</image:title>
      <image:caption>In that moment, we understood there was no time to convince, no space to negotiate. If we walked away, Maddy would not survive. So we took her. She was small, scared, and quiet during that first part of the journey. We carried her from the highlands down to Lima, not fully knowing what would come next, only knowing that she deserved a chance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - From a Death Sentence in the Andes to a Forever Home in Seattle: Maddy’s Journey</image:title>
      <image:caption>From Lima, Maddy began a much longer journey — one that would take her far beyond anything we had imagined for her. She traveled to Los Angeles, and from there, continued on to Seattle. It was not easy. Traveling with a rescue dog comes with uncertainty, logistics, and emotional weight. But step by step, she moved closer to a different life. Today, Maddy is safe. She has a home in Seattle. She is loved, protected, and no longer at risk. The life that was almost taken from her is now fully hers to live.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Osito’s Story: A Promise Broken</image:title>
      <image:caption>Adopting a dog is a long-term responsibility. It is not something temporary, and it is not something that can be undone after a few months. What happened to Osito is a clear example of why this matters. Osito first came into our lives in 2023, when he was still a puppy. He had been abandoned in El Rosario neighborhood (El Hueco) Jauja, and was the victim of a hit-and-run accident. When we found him, he was injured, vulnerable, and completely alone. We rushed him to Veterinaria Espinoza, where he underwent surgery. Thankfully, the veterinarians were able to save his front leg, and after recovery, he was able to walk again. After everything he went through, someone stepped forward and offered to adopt him. At the time, we believed this would be his opportunity to finally have a stable and loving home. However, that promise did not last.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Osito’s Story: A Promise Broken</image:title>
      <image:caption>Shortly after Osito recovered, the person who had committed to caring for him moved to Lima and never returned. Osito was once again left behind, forced to survive on the streets. Over time, many people in Jauja came to recognize him. He was often seen around Plaza de Armas, Santa Isabel, and near the bridge, searching for food and attention. Osito also suffered from a severe allergy to fleas and ticks, which caused constant itching and painful wounds on his skin. His condition made life on the streets even more difficult.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Osito’s Story: A Promise Broken</image:title>
      <image:caption>In 2024, we were finally able to rescue him again. We provided medical treatment, helped his skin heal, and made sure he received proper care and nutrition. He was also neutered as part of our commitment to responsible animal care. Once he recovered, we began the process of finding him a home again. A family came forward and decided to adopt Osito. They took him to live in Mazma. Because of Osito’s history, we did not simply hand him over and walk away — we followed up. We visited him after three months, and then again after six months. His home was located high up in the hills, in a place that was not easy to reach, but we made the effort because we wanted to make sure he was truly safe and well cared for. During those visits, Osito appeared to be doing well. He seemed calm, adapted to his environment, and comfortable with the family. Based on what we saw, we believed he had finally found the home he deserved.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Osito’s Story: A Promise Broken</image:title>
      <image:caption>However, months later, Osito suddenly appeared again in Jauja — alone. We want to be very clear about this: Osito did not return on his own. If he had tried to come back, he would have done so much earlier. The area he was familiar with was El Hueco, not Jauja. Yet he was found near the bridge and the main square, as if he had been left there. Everything indicates that he was brought back and abandoned. This is not a misunderstanding. This is abandonment. When we found him again, Osito had wounds on his back and was in poor condition. Once again, he needed medical attention. And once again, we stepped in. Osito is not just another case for us. He is part of our family. And when an animal becomes part of our family, we do not turn our backs on them, even when it is difficult.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Tetitas: From the Jauja Streets to a Forever Sanctuary</image:title>
      <image:caption>The sweet dog from the Jauja bus terminal Tetitas is a gentle and friendly dog who lived for a long time at the bus terminal in Jauja, where many workers and drivers knew her well. She was a familiar face there, always calm, sweet, and looking for kindness from anyone passing by. In early 2025, we noticed something was wrong. Tetitas began bleeding, and at first we believed she might simply be in heat. At that time, Pichuberry did not yet have Casa de Aurora, and all of our foster homes were already full. We were doing everything we could just to keep up with emergency rescues. When the time was right, we brought Tetitas to the veterinarian and had her spayed, hoping this would protect her and improve her life on the streets. But the bleeding didn’t stop.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Tetitas: From the Jauja Streets to a Forever Sanctuary</image:title>
      <image:caption>By June 2025, when I was in Peru, we brought Tetitas back to the vet for more tests. At first nothing appeared abnormal, but the bleeding continued. Something was clearly wrong. After further examinations, we finally discovered the cause. Tetitas had TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) a cancer that affects many stray dogs who live on the streets. She needed treatment immediately. Tetitas began a series of four chemotherapy treatments, which required weekly trips to the veterinarian. During this time she stayed at Casa de Aurora, where she could rest, recover, and finally feel safe.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Tetitas: From the Jauja Streets to a Forever Sanctuary</image:title>
      <image:caption>Little by little, she became stronger. Today Tetitas is healthy, happy, and free of the tumor. The bleeding has stopped, and she enjoys life at Casa de Aurora surrounded by care and affection. When Tetitas first arrived, we thought she might return to the streets after treatment. But sometimes a dog simply becomes part of the family. Tetitas did. Now she is a beloved resident of Casa de Aurora.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>In January, we rescued 10 vulnerable cats from Pancan. Some were just kittens, small, fragile, fighting to survive. We created a “Be My Valentine” campaign to give them a chance, and thankfully, many of them found homes. One of the kittens lost an eye, but even she was adopted. That alone felt like a miracle. But not every story was easy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>These cats were not used to humans. They had lived their entire lives outdoors, without affection, without touch, without trust. They didn’t know what it meant to be held, to be safe, or to be loved. They were terrified. We soon learned that the mother cat had feline leukemia, and some of the kittens were also affected. It was devastating. We had to make difficult decisions with limited space and resources. Jenny kept the mom and her babies. I brought five of the stronger adult cats to Casa de Aurora in Tingo Paccha, hoping to give them a safer place to recover.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>But bringing outdoor cats inside is not always simple. For them, it wasn’t safety, it was fear. Two of them escaped. One came back (Lucy). The other one didn’t return, but we have not given up on her. We know she is nearby, staying around an abandoned house close to Casa de Aurora. She is still very afraid of humans, and although we hoped she would come back on her own, she hasn’t yet. But she is not alone. Ketty, our caregiver at Casa de Aurora, has been patiently following her, bringing her food every day and keeping an eye on her from a distance. We know she is there. We know she is safe, at least for now. And we are not giving up.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>We are preparing to safely catch her using a humane trap, so we can bring her to the veterinarian, understand her condition, and give her the care she deserves. I truly believe this is not the end of her story. Very soon, she will have a name. And hopefully, a home. Another one was too weak… and didn’t survive. Eventually, two returned to Jenny. Both tested positive for leukemia and required urgent medical care. They were hospitalized for about two weeks, receiving intensive treatment for dehydration and weakness. Today, they remain under Jenny’s care, living separately from other cats to protect everyone. And then… there was one. One cat who chose to stay (Lucy).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>So yesterday, we made the decision to catch her. It was one of those days that takes everything out of you. We tried to coordinate transport to the vet, one person, then another, then another. Plans fell through. The rain started. Time passed. And all the while, she was inside the kennel… scared, confused, and unable to understand why. We felt terrible. But we also knew something important: if we let her go, we might never be able to catch her again. So we waited. We kept her warm. We stayed with her the best we could. And we held on to hope that the next day would be better.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>This morning at 8 a.m., she finally made it to the veterinarian. I was so afraid of the results. After everything we had already seen, I thought she might have leukemia too. But she didn’t. She tested positive for FIV, feline immunodeficiency virus. A diagnosis, yes… but also a relief. It’s something manageable. Something she can live with, especially in a safe, indoor home.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Lucy: The One Who Came Back</image:title>
      <image:caption>Now, Lucy is still learning. Learning that humans can be kind. Learning that touch is not something to fear. Learning that she is finally safe. We decided to name her Lucy. Lucy, the one who came back. The one who stayed, even when she was afraid. Tomorrow, Lucy will be spayed. And soon, she will go home. Not every story ends this way. But this one did. And today, that is enough</image:caption>

Dodie was so hungry and desperate that she would chase and eat anything she could. Instead of helping her, people chose to tie her up, so she wouldn’t hunt their animals. But they didn’t feed her. They didn’t care for her. She was left there… starving.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Doddie: A Mother’s Survival in the Andes</image:title>
      <image:caption>We tried to find a safe place for her before she gave birth. But we couldn’t secure a shelter in time. Dodie gave birth alone to nine puppies. And once the puppies were born, rescuing her became even more difficult. She was a large dog, extremely weak, and now she had nine tiny babies depending on her. We eventually found a temporary foster home for her, just until I could arrive in Peru. I arrived. That same day, I went to pick her up. I took Dodie and her nine puppies with me to my Airbnb, which had a small patio where she could stay safely, along with other puppies I had rescued. It was heartbreaking to watch her care for her babies. She was so thin… and there were nine puppies.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>But love is powerful. When you show a dog that you are not there to hurt them, that you will stay, no matter what, they begin to change. Slowly, Dodie started to trust me. She became my friend. She began to feel safe. I bathed her, she smelled very bad from everything she had been through. She was terrified of going outside. She wouldn’t even take one step out the door. But little by little… she learned again. Her puppies suffered too. We did everything we could to care for them, but we later realized that Dodie had severe parasites—and she had passed them on to her puppies through nursing. Even with constant care and deworming, we couldn’t save them all. Only two of her nine puppies survived. Some suffering begins long before rescue arrives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - The Story of Manguito, Toñita, and Paris</image:title>
      <image:caption>Neighbors began hearing puppies crying day and night. They didn’t know how to help or how to enter the house, but they tried their best by throwing food through openings in the roof and above the door. Eventually, they contacted us and reported this case of abuse in August. We spoke with the police and tried to intervene, but there was no one living in the house, and no one wanted to enter. The police refused to help and took no action. At that time, we also did not have a foster home available, we didn’t know where to take them, and we were unable to rescue them. The location was also far from us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - The Story of Manguito, Toñita, and Paris</image:title>
      <image:caption>In September 2024, we finally found help. A volunteer named Jenny, along with Cataleya, went to rescue them, and we were able to secure a temporary foster home with Mrs. Maura. I asked if she could keep them only until November, because I would be arriving in Peru then and would take responsibility for them. That same month, they were rescued, rehabilitated, vaccinated, and carefully fed so they could gain weight. They were extremely thin, just skin and bones.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - The Story of Manguito, Toñita, and Paris</image:title>
      <image:caption>I arrived in Peru in November, and I picked them up. They were still very small. Manguito is very shy, and all of them hide and are afraid of people and of everything around them. They are dogs who never received affection, so it has been very difficult for them to trust humans. Even so, we have always tried to be as loving and gentle with them as possible. Because we didn’t have a stable foster home for them, adoption was very difficult. They are not friendly or social dogs. Over time, they moved from one temporary home to another, until the opening of Casa de Aurora in June 2025. That’s when everything changed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - The Story of Manguito, Toñita, and Paris</image:title>
      <image:caption>In August 2025, someone wanted to adopt Manguito. I believed it was a good family and agreed to the adoption, thinking he would finally have a home, especially because there was a child in the household. However, shortly after, we noticed that Manguito was always outside on the street. He was extremely thin. When I spoke with the family, they said Manguito wasn’t social, wasn’t affectionate, didn’t want to play with the child, and didn’t want to eat. I believe he stopped eating because he was depressed. He had never been alone, he had always lived with his mother, his sister, and the other dogs. Manguito became very underweight and was eating trash on the street. That was absolutely not the life we want for our babies. So I brought him back to Casa de Aurora.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Sadly, one of the puppies passed away yesterday. The four remaining babies are now fighting for their lives after testing positive for distemper. They are weak and have diarrhea, but they are still playing, running, and showing us their incredible will to live. Every hour matters. Right now they are receiving daily treatment, vitamins, and supportive care. Señora Melva is watching them closely, feeding them small pieces of chicken breast and keeping them hydrated with warm chicken broth to help them regain strength.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Perlita: A Promise We Had to Keep</image:title>
      <image:caption>There are some stories that stay with you. Perlita is one of them. We found her in November 2025 in Tingo Paccha. She was just a tiny kitten, no more than two months old. Fragile, underweight, and barely covered in fur, she looked more like a little rat than a cat. Her ears seemed burned, shiny and damaged, as if something had hurt her deeply. But what stayed with me the most was not how she looked. It was how scared she was. She was trembling, silent, trying to disappear. That day, my mother in-law and I picked her up, and without saying it out loud, I made her a promise: You are safe now. I will take care of you.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Perlita: A Promise We Had to Keep</image:title>
      <image:caption>Learning to Trust Again Perlita slowly began to heal. We fed her carefully, every 2 hours helping her regain strength. We gave her warmth, attention, and patience. Day by day, she started to trust again. She became sweet. Gentle. Loving. The kind of kitten who just needed a chance. And when December came, we believed she was ready for a home. We found someone who promised to care for her, protect her, and love her. We made it clear: Perlita needed to be sterilized, and Pichuberry would cover the full cost. Everything seemed right. In December, we received a photo. She looked okay. I wanted to believe she was happy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Perlita: A Promise We Had to Keep</image:title>
      <image:caption>The Perlita We Found Again We took her back immediately. But she was no longer the same kitten. The loving, trusting baby we once held… was gone. Now, Perlita is pregnant. Now, Perlita is deeply afraid of humans. She hides under the bed and does not move. She avoids contact. She does not understand that she is safe again. And that is the hardest part. Because we know who she used to be.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Perlita: A Promise We Had to Keep</image:title>
      <image:caption>Be Part of Perlita’s Healing Today, Perlita is safe. She is warm. She has food. She is no longer alone. She is resting in a quiet room at Casa Aurora, with the heat on, soft blankets, and nourishing meals, including wet food and warm chicken broth to help her regain strength. But she is still healing. She is pregnant. She is scared. And she needs time, care, and patience to learn to trust again. At Pichuberry, we are doing everything we can for her. But we cannot do it alone. You can be part of Perlita’s journey. By sponsoring Perlita, you help provide: Daily nutritious meals Veterinary care for her and her future kittens A safe, warm space for recovery The time and patience she needs to heal This is more than support. This is helping Perlita believe in kindness again.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Our volunteer Jasmine went to check on her. Instead of running away, Julie ran straight toward Jasmine, asking for help. She immediately began following her everywhere. At that moment, Jasmine didn’t know what to do, there was no foster home available, and large dogs are extremely difficult to place for adoption in Peru. But Jasmine couldn’t turn her away. Julie stayed temporarily with Jasmine’s family so we could spay her and help her recover. The plan was to release her again after surgery, but Julie had other plans, when Jasmine tried to return her to the street, Julie simply followed her back home. She had chosen her person.</image:caption>

A woman who owned a small food stand in San Lorenzo said a thin stray dog matching Julie’s description had been wandering near the main square and sometimes came to her stand for food. When we found Julie, our hearts broke. She was extremely thin and injured, with burns on her nose, face, and paw. <image:caption>Every day on my way to Jauja, I would stop my car and bring her food. At first, she would not come close. She was extremely scared and kept her distance, always ready to run. I would place the food on the ground, step back to my car, and quietly watch as she ate. Her paws would shake with fear as she ate quickly. She was so hungry and so thin. Day after day, this became our routine. I started calling her “Milky.” Soon she began recognizing my voice and would slowly approach when I called her name always keeping a safe distance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Milky’s Rescue Story: How a Starving Border Collie Survived the Mountains</image:title>
      <image:caption>For three months, I visited Milky almost every day, bringing chicken, soup, or whatever food I could carry in my container. My only hope was that one day she would trust me enough so I could help her. Finally, with the help of my colleague Yulisa, we were able to safely rescue her. Even after eating the food we prepared with mild sedatives, Milky was still terrified. When we approached her, she showed her teeth out of fear. (End of August 2025) I slowly crawled toward her, speaking softly. “It’s okay, Milky… I’m not going to hurt you.” The first thing I could reach was her ear. I gently touched it, continuing to reassure her. Then I carefully held her in my arms while Yulisa brought the kennel. We placed her inside, and for the first time, Milky was finally safe. That day felt like a miracle.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Blanquita and the Cycle That Had to End</image:title>
      <image:caption>I first saw Blanquita in August. She was pregnant, extremely thin, and eating garbage near a ravine under a bridge, a place where people regularly dump trash. She was scared and would not let anyone get close. Every time I tried to approach her, she ran. I started bringing her food, hoping she would slowly begin to trust me. But Blanquita had learned to survive alone. Trust was not easy for her. When I had to leave, she was still there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Blanquita and the Cycle That Had to End</image:title>
      <image:caption>When I Came Back In November, I returned to Tingo. By then, her puppies were already walking. Some had been taken by people, she had 7 puppies. I was able to rescue two of them, Lili and Vaqui. But Blanquita was still there. Still vulnerable. Still unspayed. Still at risk of becoming pregnant again. And I knew I could not leave her a second time without changing her future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Blanquita and the Cycle That Had to End</image:title>
      <image:caption>The next morning, at 5 a.m., we were back. That was the day. There was no other opportunity. It had to happen. Again, we came prepared — with food, with sedatives, and with everything we had left in us. It took almost eight hours. Eight hours of trying. Eight hours of patience. Eight hours of not giving up. And finally… we got her. We placed her gently into a kennel and carried her out. It was exhausting. It was emotional. But we did it.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Blanquita and the Cycle That Had to End</image:title>
      <image:caption>A New Beginning We provided Blanquita with a large dog house to protect her from the cold Andean nights and heavy rains. Blanquita was spayed. One surgery. That single procedure means she will never again give birth in the streets. No more litters under a bridge. No more puppies fighting to survive surrounded by garbage and danger. Spaying Blanquita didn’t just help her, it stopped a cycle. Today, she is safer. Protected. No longer alone in survival.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6705ac19f151880ad034306b/6bb286db-a852-4b65-9624-52b10098805b/rescue-dog-eating-blanquita.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Blanquita and the Cycle That Had to End</image:title>
      <image:caption>After the Surgery We kept her at Casa Aurora for observation. When she woke up from anesthesia, she was terrified. She didn’t know where she was. She tried to escape, agitated and scared. I didn’t want her to hurt herself. So I brought her into my bedroom. I laid down beside her… quietly… just letting her feel that she was safe. I also brought her puppies, Lili and Vaquita. I don’t know if she recognized them, but I wanted her to feel something familiar. Slowly, she calmed down. And we fell asleep together. The next day, everything changed. She was no longer afraid of us. She ate, she was so hungry. She walked around the patio, calm, relaxed… safe.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Voices from the Andes - Blanquita and the Cycle That Had to End</image:title>
      <image:caption>It was like seeing a different dog. That was the moment she understood: we were not going to hurt her. That was the beginning. Today, when Blanquita sees Ketty or sees me, her tail starts wagging. Now, we bring her food. We built her a shelter. She is protected. She is no longer surviving. She is living.</image:caption>
