Five Puppies Abandoned in the Cold Andes: Four Are Still Fighting

Two weeks ago, during a rainy Sunday street fair in Jauja, five tiny puppies were abandoned near the market.

The weather was cold, wet, and unforgiving, conditions that are especially dangerous for puppies in the Andes.

During the rainy season, puppies are often the ones who suffer the most. Without shelter or warmth, their fragile bodies quickly become weak and vulnerable to disease.

Thankfully, Señora Melva, a compassionate animal lover from Acolla, could not ignore them. Even though she already cares for six rescued dogs of her own, she took the five puppies into her home to keep them warm and safe.

Sadly, one of the puppies passed away yesterday.

The four remaining babies are now fighting for their lives after testing positive for distemper. They are weak and have diarrhea, but they are still playing, running, and showing us their incredible will to live. Every hour matters.

Right now they are receiving daily treatment, vitamins, and supportive care. Señora Melva is watching them closely, feeding them small pieces of chicken breast and keeping them hydrated with warm chicken broth to help them regain strength.

For the next few days, we will continue intensive treatment and monitoring. We are hopeful that these brave little fighters will win this battle.

At Pichuberry, our mission is prevention through spay and neuter campaigns so fewer animals suffer abandonment and disease. But when we see puppies in need, we cannot turn away.

You can help these babies keep fighting.

By sponsoring their care, you help cover veterinary treatment, medications, and nutritional support while they recover.

Every act of compassion gives them a better chance.
