At Pichuberry, expansion into new communities means opening doors to compassionate care where it is needed most.
On October 13, we celebrated another major step forward by hosting our first-ever spay and neuter campaign in Canchayllo, Jauja.
Bringing veterinary services to new regions comes with unique challenges, but thanks to the incredible support and generous funding of the Jason Heigl Foundation, we were able to deliver safe, professional sterilizations directly to local families and their animals.
Progress, Education, and Responsible Pet Ownership
During this inaugural event, 27 companion animals received life-changing surgeries: 15 dogs and 12 cats.
While we always hope to sterilize as many animals as possible, October 13 also highlighted how crucial community education is to our work.
In Canchayllo, many dogs typically sleep outdoors. Because of the cold mountain temperatures, our team made the vital decision that surgeries could only proceed if families could commit to keeping their pets warm, protected, and carefully supervised indoors throughout their recovery.
Safe postoperative care is a non-negotiable part of responsible sterilization.
This requirement opened up meaningful, compassionate conversations with local caregivers about responsible pet ownership — reinforcing the message that our domestic animals are true family members deserving of shelter and care.
Building Trust and Community Support
Our team also encountered several vulnerable free-roaming dogs we hoped to sterilize but could not safely secure, alongside a few registered pets that could not undergo surgery due to individual health or safety reasons.
We are not leaving these animals behind: we are continuing to follow these specific cases and plan to coordinate their sterilizations through our local partner, Veterinaria Espinoza in Jauja.
Despite these challenges, the overall response from Canchayllo was deeply encouraging.
Local neighbors and community volunteers stepped up to help our team handle and catch vulnerable dogs, working side-by-side with us throughout the day.
This collaborative spirit is how we build the trust necessary to create long-term impact.
Looking Ahead in Canchayllo
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Jason Heigl Foundation.
Their sponsorship made this entire campaign possible, allowing Pichuberry to expand our footprint into underserved areas and give 27 animals a brighter, healthier future.
Every single sterilization represents fewer unwanted litters, less abandonment, and a reduction in animal suffering.
Just as in Paca, the first seed has been planted in Canchayllo.
We look forward to returning, continuing our educational outreach, and deepening our partnership with this wonderful community.
