Huancaní Campaign

On March 28, 2026, Pichuberry successfully carried out the first sterilization campaign funded by the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust in the community of Huancaní, serving nearby areas including Sincos, Muqui, and Muquiyauyos.

A total of 60 pets were registered for the campaign, reflecting strong community interest and demand for accessible sterilization services.

On the day of the campaign, approximately 52 pet owners attended with their animals.

Following veterinary evaluation, 39 dogs and cats were safely sterilized.

Not all registered animals were eligible for surgery due to medical and ethical considerations. Some animals were:

  • Below the minimum age requirement (under 6 months)

  • Pregnant, requiring postponement for safety

  • Required further monitoring before undergoing surgery

These decisions were made to ensure animal welfare and safe surgical outcomes, in accordance with veterinary best practices.

Follow-Up & Continuity of Care

Pichuberry has implemented structured follow-up actions to ensure that no animal is left behind:

  • Underage animals: All pet owners have been registered, and their animals are being scheduled for free sterilization at a partner clinic in Jauja once they reach the appropriate age.

  • Pregnant animals: Cases are being closely monitored. Pichuberry will support safe outcomes for both mother and puppies, including coordination for responsible adoption when possible, and will ensure that the mother dogs are later transported to Veterinaria Clínica Espinoza for free sterilization once medically appropriate.

This approach ensures continuity of care and maximizes the long-term impact of the campaign.

Additional Impact – Responsible Follow-Up Care

During the campaign, a family of cats was supported as part of Pichuberry’s extended care approach.

The mother cats were successfully sterilized, and the kittens are currently under Pichuberry’s care for responsible adoption. They have been shared through Pichuberry’s website and social media channels, and are being matched with suitable adopters through a structured adoption process.

Pichuberry has also committed to ensuring that all female kittens will be sterilized at approximately six months of age at no cost, preventing future litters and continuing the cycle of prevention.

Key Outcomes

  • 60 pets registered

  • 52 animals presented on campaign day (approx.)

  • 39 animals successfully sterilized

  • 100% of non-eligible cases enrolled in follow-up care

Closing

Despite the limitations on the day of surgery, the campaign demonstrated strong community engagement, high demand for future services, and the importance of continued education on appropriate sterilization timing.

Through Maddy’s Program – Andes of Peru, Pichuberry remains committed to expanding access to sterilization services and preventing animal suffering at its source.
