Julie: A loyal heart who refused to be abandoned

In March 2025, Julie was reported to Pichuberry while she was in heat and being chased by more than a dozen dogs in the streets.

She looked exhausted and overwhelmed.

Our volunteer Jasmine went to check on her.

Instead of running away, Julie ran straight toward Jasmine, asking for help.

She immediately began following her everywhere.

At that moment, Jasmine didn’t know what to do, there was no foster home available, and large dogs are extremely difficult to place for adoption in Peru.

But Jasmine couldn’t turn her away.

Julie stayed temporarily with Jasmine’s family so we could spay her and help her recover.

The plan was to release her again after surgery, but Julie had other plans, when Jasmine tried to return her to the street, Julie simply followed her back home.

She had chosen her person.

For months Jasmine cared for Julie while we searched for a home. Eventually, when Casa de Aurora opened its doors, Julie moved there along with several other rescued dogs.

Then something wonderful happened… In August 2025, Julie was adopted together with another rescued dog, Zorrita.

We personally delivered them to their new home in the Mantaro Valley and believed they had finally found the life they deserved.

But a few weeks later, we received heartbreaking news.

Julie had disappeared.

Her adoptive family believed she might return on her own, but weeks passed without any sign of her. When we learned she was missing, we immediately began searching — contacting local radio stations, community leaders, and sharing her photo everywhere.

Finally, someone recognized her.

A woman who owned a small food stand in San Lorenzo said a thin stray dog matching Julie’s description had been wandering near the main square and sometimes came to her stand for food.

When we found Julie, our hearts broke.

She was extremely thin and injured, with burns on her nose, face, and paw.

We don’t know what happened to her while she was missing, but it was clear she had suffered.

Julie was brought back to Casa de Aurora, where she could finally recover in safety.

Today Julie is healing.

She is safe, loved, and surrounded by the people who refused to give up on her.

She is still hoping for a family one day, but until then, she needs support from kind people who believe every dog deserves a second chance.
