The Dog Who Chose Us: How Mocha Found Her Way to Casa Aurora

Sometimes, we rescue animals. And sometimes, animals rescue themselves by choosing exactly where they belong.

This is the incredible story of Mocha — a beautiful white and caramel-coated soul who went from a starving, forgotten mother on the side of the road to a beloved fixture at Casa Aurora. Today, she is ready for the ultimate chapter in her journey: finding a true forever family.

A Familiar Shadow in Tingo Paccha

The first time we spotted Mocha was in June 2025, during the drives between Jauja and Casa Aurora.

Day after day, she was there — wandering alone near the ravines, surviving on whatever garbage she could find.

She was painfully thin, her ribs clearly visible, and it was obvious she had recently given birth.

Everyone in the area knew her. Everyone had seen her pregnant and starving.

Yet, she remained just another forgotten dog on the streets.

Determined to help, we began carrying food in the car, stopping every time she appeared. Because of her striking coat, we named her Mocha.

At first, she wouldn't let anyone near. She was timid, cautious, and always on guard. We would leave food on the ground and walk away; only then would she approach to eat.

A Hidden Discovery

For months, the worry was constant. We knew she was nursing, but her puppies were nowhere to be found.

Then came the day we heard tiny cries echoing from a hidden hole in the ground, carefully camouflaged beneath eucalyptus leaves. Inside were six puppies. We were able to safely rescue four of them that afternoon — three boys and a girl. Thanks to our community, every single one of those healthy puppies grew up and was adopted into a loving home.

As we spoke with neighbors, Mocha's heartbreaking past began to unravel. We learned she had been callously abandoned from a car traveling between Tarma and Jauja. Left to fend for herself, she had survived multiple litters on the street. Some puppies vanished; some were taken. Tragically, an entire previous litter had been killed by a passing vehicle.

We knew we had to break this cycle.

The Journey to Trust

By November 2025, after months of slowly building her trust, it was time for her spay surgery. Because she was still too terrified to be handled, we had to use mild sedatives to safely capture her and get her to the clinic. It was just in time — she was already going into heat.

Following her successful recovery, a kind neighbor named Luzmila offered to adopt her. We were thrilled! Mocha finally had a couch to call her own.

But Mocha had other plans.

Just two days later, she was found back in the exact same ravine, searching through trash. We returned her to her new home, but the cycle repeated. Eventually, the time came for us to return to the United States, leaving her in the neighborhood's care.

The very next day, the phone rang. It was Casa Aurora’s caregiver:

"Señora Clara, did you take Mocha? Mocha came back."

Mocha hadn't gone back to her old territory. She had walked all the way to the gates of Casa Aurora.

From Shelter to Showcase: It’s Mocha's Turn

Since that day, Mocha has officially made Casa Aurora her sanctuary.

She sleeps peacefully with the other dogs, plays in the yard, and spends her days surrounded by safety, full bowls, and constant kindness.

Mocha didn't choose Casa Aurora because she wants to live in a shelter forever. She chose it because it was the very first place in her entire life where she felt genuinely safe.

Today, Mocha is healthy, spayed, beautifully gentle, and incredibly sweet.

She has transformed completely from the frightened, untouchable dog by the ravine.

But as much as we love her, she deserves more than a shelter. She deserves a family of her own.
